What is Image Guided-Superficial Radiation Therapy?

Image Guided-Superficial Radiation Therapy (IG-SRT) is a safe and effective alternative to surgery. It is a minimally invasive treatment that safely destroys non-melanoma skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and keloids, without destroying healthy surrounding tissue. IG-SRT is a painless, safe, highly effective, and non-surgical treatment option. It is used to treat lesions on the arms, legs, back, trunk, face, head, and neck. IG-SRT can even be used to treat lesions along the fold of the nose, eyelids, lips, corner of the mouth, and lining of the ear.

How does Image-Guided- Superficial Radiation Therapy differ from traditional radiation therapy?

IG-SRT delivers a precise, calibrated dose of radiation that only penetrates five millimeters below the skin’s surface. It uses low energy to deliver the treatments, requiring less energy than a normal chest x-ray. This is unlike traditional radiation treatments that deliver massive amounts of energy to penetrate deep into the body which can cause severe skin reactions. IG-SRT is delivered by a machine called an SRT- 100 Vision. This machine offers a high-frequency ultrasound for imaging. The ultrasound component is utilized at every treatment to ensure appropriate clinical response and progress.

What are the side effects?

With IG-SRT skin reactions are typically very mild. Patients can expect to see redness, in the area of treatment, usually after several treatments. A crust or scaly patch may also develop in the treatment area. Only if the treatment area is in a place of hair growth will the patient experience some localized hair loss. However, the follicles will grow new hair over time, after the course of treatment is complete. Once treatments are complete the skin will heal up quickly.

Why IG-SRT?

IG-SRT is performed right in the office at our West Lafayette and Kokomo locations. Its advantages include: no cutting, no pain, no downtime, and minimal to no scarring. This treatment option is ideal for patients who have trouble healing. IG-SRT does not require the stopping of blood thinners and has little to no disruption in daily activities. Treatments are highly effective and comparable to Mohs surgery but does not require cutting, therefore, it does not leave a scar. After the course of IG-SRT treatments are complete the patient will follow up in 2 weeks to check the progress of treatments.

Keloid Treatments

Superficial Radiation Therapy may also be used to treat keloids. Keloids typically arise from post-piercings, surgical scars, injuries, or in individuals who are genetically prone to keloids. Keloids are typically treated with three SRT treatments immediately following an excision or shave removal. SRT safely destroys the cells that form keloids.
